Things to do in Hobart

Australia's most southern city is a top place to visit. Whether you're drawn in by the warm hospitality, striking vistas, or needing a breath of some of the cleanest air in the world – Hobart has it all.

Tasman Peninsula
Tasman Peninsula

The Tasman Peninsula can be seen on a day trip from Hobart, but we recommend carving out a few days of your trip to really explore this picturesque spot. Only a 1.5-hour drive from Hobart, escape the city for a jam-packed weekend of unreal scenery, native wildlife, and local cuisine. Home to pristine beaches, rolling hills covered in gum trees, towering sea cliffs, national parks, and an abundance of native animals, there is something for everyone. While you are here, visit the Port Arthur Historic Site, do a wilderness cruise and get up close with the Tasmanian devils.

Freycinet
Freycinet

On the east coast of Tasmania lies Freycinet National Park. Explore the wild beauty of this peninsula as you traverse the pure white beaches, azure bays, and pink granite mountains. The towering pink mountains, known as the Hazards dominate the landscape of this National Park, and below them lie the placid blue waters of Wineglass Bay. Keen hikers flock to the coastal forests, while foodies indulge in local seafood and wines.

Cradle Mountain
Cradle Mountain

Located at the northern end of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, Cradle Mountain is one of the most popular natural attractions in Tasmania. Belonging to the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Area, the surrounding landscape of Cradle Mountain is extremely diverse, including rainforest, grassland, and ancient plants. The park is also home to an abundance of local wildlife, such as Tasmanian devils, platypus, echidna, quolls, and several bird species. With many great walks to choose from, this is an opportunity for everyone to explore firsthand, the rugged and wild beauty of Tasmania.

Tasmania's Wild West Coast
Tasmania's Wild West Coast

Home to wild rivers, ancient pine trees, and giant dunes, the west coast of Tasmania is famously wild. If you're chasing the rush of adrenaline, experience a white-water rafting expedition down the infamous Franklin River. For something more laid back, cruise down the magical Gordon River or hike past 1000-year-old Huon pines in one of the last temperate rainforests in the world. Known as one of Australia's last wilderness frontier's – be sure to include a trip to this region on your next Tassie road trip.

Nature is what Tasmania does best. With 19 national parks scattered throughout the state, from quiet beaches, bush walks, towering mountains, curious wildlife and an abundance of flora and fauna - Tasmania's national parks are a nature lover's paradise. As well as Freycinet, Cradle Mountain, and the Tasman Peninsula, there are even more incredible and notable national parks to explore on your Tasmania Road trip.
