Dog-Friendly Campervan Adventures — Bring Your Pets Along (Cats Welcome Too!)

Hitting the road just isn’t the same without your furry crew. We know pets are family, and your next campervan trip should include every member — four-legged ones included. Here’s your guide to making sure your dog or cat can join you on the journey, from booking to drop-off.

Booking Your Pet-Friendly Campervan

Every Mighty camper is ready to host up to two well-behaved, registered dogs or cats. Simply add a $315 pet fee when you book your campervan — this covers a deep clean after your trip, so it’s fresh for the next traveller. Service animals are exempt from this fee. Before you set off, make sure your pets are flea-treated, toilet-trained, and ready for adventure.

Planning Your Route

Not everywhere is as pet-obsessed as you are, so planning ahead is key. Double-check that your intended campgrounds and destinations allow pets. The thl Roadtrip App is a great tool for finding campsites and Holiday Parks along your route. When you click on a Park in the app for more information, it will show a dog icon if that park welcomes pets on arrangement. Many National Parks in Australia and New Zealand, as well as Department of Conservation sites in New Zealand don’t allow animals, to ensure the protection of native wildlife — check the DOC website before you visit. Don’t forget to check if the activities or experiences you plan on doing allows pets as well.

Packing for Your Pet

Don’t forget your buddy’s essentials:

  • A seat belt or harness for safe travel and fewer distractions
  • Their own bed for comfort on the road
  • Food and treats (all campers have a fridge for freshness)
  • Favorite toys to keep them entertained, especially on long drives
  • Food and water bowls (you’ll need to bring your own for your pet)
  • Poop bags to keep things tidy
  • Leash and long lead — some sites will require them
  • Towels for muddy adventures or post-beach cleanups
  • Tent pegs to secure leashes at your campsite – a dog tether/tie out cable is a great option
  • Jackets or blankets, depending on the weather

At Pickup and Drop-Off

When you arrive at (or leave) any of our branches please keep your pet secured on a lead and supervised by an adult outside the branch. Our team will walk you through your campervan and answer any questions before you hit the open road.

On the Road

Keep your pets clean and dry before they hop into the camper. While driving, make sure they’re safe and restrained in the rear of the vehicle to avoid distracting the driver. We don’t supply pet restraints, so pack what you need to make your pet comfortable and secure. Never leave your pet unattended in the campervan.

Remember, any costs from damage or soiling caused by pets aren’t covered by our liability reduction option — those are your responsibility as the hirer. Please dispose of pet waste properly — we don’t supply plastic bags or bins.
