Driving tips

  • Keep LEFT! We drive on the left-hand side of the road.
  • Always wear your seat belt. Everyone in your vehicle must wear a seatbelt, and children must be secured in an approved child seat. Your rental vehicle company can rent child seats to you if you didn’t bring your own
  • Keep to the speed limit and always stop at STOP signs.
  • Always slow down to observe recommended speeds around bends.
  • Overtake other vehicles only when it’s safe to do so. Use passing lanes whenever possible, and never cross a solid yellow line on your side of the centre line.
  • Stay well-rested. Plan to only drive 1 - 2 hours at a time, and take regular breaks during your journey to stretch your legs.
  • Drive to the conditions. You’ll need to reduce your speed if it’s raining, icy or snowing, windy, or if you’re in a roadworks area. Ask your accommodation provider if in doubt.
  • Do not drink and drive. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a crime in Australia and strictly enforced by police, with severe penalties for offenders.

Make sure you have a valid licence to drive in Australia

If you have a foreign licence, please ensure:

  • it is current
  • it is appropriate for a full-size motor vehicle (not restricted or learner)
  • it is accompanied by an International Driving Permit.

If your licence is in a language other than English you must also present an accredited English translation.

Toll Roads in Australia

Road toll fees apply on some roads in Australia. You will likely encounter toll roads if you are driving through Metropolitan New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.

You are responsible for paying road toll fees when driving a rental campervan vehicle in Australia. It is important to be aware of these roads before you travel as toll roads in Australia are electronically tolled, you will not be able to stop and pay cash. You will need to set up a visitor’s e-pass once you have picked up a motorhome in Australia. Any unpaid tolls will incur an administration fee from us in addition to the fee owed to the tolling company.

You can set up a pass on www.roamexpress.com.au for as little as $1.50 and then be automatically charged if you use toll roads. This must be done within 48 hours of travelling on a toll road.

On Pick Up

Once you get to the branch, you'll be on the road in your Mighty Camper in no time. Our Mighty crew will give you the keys to your Camper and have a look at your driver's licence. Once you're in your vehicle, any extra hire items will be there ready for you. Mighty handy vehicle information will be in the passenger door pocket just in case you forget where the light switches are when you are on the road.

Rental Agreement – A copy will be emailed to you and available to view on the in-vehicle tablet.
Vehicle Condition Form – just sign it and you're on the road. If you have any queries about it, just check in with the Mighty crew.
Accident form – just in case

Once at the branch for pick up, one of our Local Host crew will show you through your vehicle and explain a bit more about how the In-Vehicle tablet works. It’s a great addition to your overall holiday experience and we know you will find it useful!

On The Road

thl Roadtrip App

We strongly advise all customers to download the thl Roadtrip App before hitting the road. There are a number of different features, functions and information all designed to help you find your way around, discover what you’re looking for and provide answers to questions you might have.

So what does it do?

  • Navigation – get you from A to B and everywhere in between
  • Suggest activities and experiences near you that you can book directly off the tablet
  • Operational 'How to' & troubleshooting videos
  • Enable a WIFI Hotspot
  • Locate useful things like campgrounds, dump stations, petrol stations and LPG refill points

24/7 On Road Support

We want to help you have a safe experience on the road as well as those on the road around you. We have the ability to assist you on the road should anything go wrong – even if in remote parts of Australia.

Although you are unlikely to need it, should you need assistance while you’re on road, please just check the Mighty handy vehicle information placed in your passenger door pocket. If you still have no luck figuring out the issue, please call our Mighty On Road crew. The number is on your keyring. To point you in the right direction, you need to talk to one of our Mighty roadside assistance crew before visiting a service centre.

Oops!  If you have had an accident or there is any new damage on your vehicle please follow the instructions on the ‘what to do if you have accident form’, you were given this at the time of pick up.  You will need to complete the full Accident Claim form when you return to the branch and remember, you need to call us on 1300 850 805 to let us know about any damage within 24-hours of it happening.  When you get back to the branch just hand the completed form to a Mighty crew member.

On Drop Off

We want to make sure you’re Mighty prepared for when you drop off your Camper.

Want a hassle-free drop-off?  We know you will want to maximise your holiday time and save time avoiding having to empty your loo and fill up your fuel tank before dropping your campervan back.  With our Express Return Pack you can pay one lump sum to have all this stuff conveniently included:

  • Return the fuel tank empty
  • Return the LPG bottle empty
  • No need to empty your wastewater or toilette cassette – we’ll do it for you (available only at Cairns, Melbourne and Sydney branches)

You can basically drop your keys and go if you have purchased the Liability Reduced option. You can add this pack at the time of booking or when completing self-check-in.

If you don’t want to save yourself time and squeeze out as much holiday time as possible then here is a list of all you need to remember to do:

Fuel & LPG – Remember to fill up your fuel and LPG before you drop off your Camper. Full means full so the gauge should register as full and the receipt for the LPG bottle should be given to one of the crew at the branch at drop off.  It must show that it’s been filled within the last 24 hours otherwise we have to charge you for them to be filled.

Empty your loo - make sure your toilet is completely empty of all waste and water.  You don’t have to put any toilet chemicals in it.  Remember if we find a surprise in the toilet cassette, you will be charged.

Clean up your room! – Make sure that you’ve taken any rubbish away, emptied the fridge, washed your dishes, swept out the floor and generally your van looks spick and span!  If it’s not in a respectable condition then a cleaning fee is charged.  Also, remember that smoking is not permitted in your Mighty Camper so this cleaning fee also applies to any smoking-related cleaning.

You’re done, too easy!
