Frequently Asked Questions
On arrival at the check-in counter:
- Please ensure any pet is supervised by an adult outside the branch and restrained on a lead
- Please have all driver’s licences for all drivers ready for our review (if your driver's licence is not in English, we require an accredited English translation or an International Driver's permit). The physical license must be presented, otherwise we cannot release the vehicle
- Please have a credit card ready for payment of any travel products or outstanding balances
- You can add any extra hire items that you may have missed during online check-in
- In NZ you will also be required to fill out this safe driving questionnaire before you leave the branch. This questionnaire is designed to help you familiarise yourself with New Zealand's road rules and means you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of your roadtrip.
- A member of our crew will then take you to your camper. At this time:
- Our crew will talk you through the camper features and allow you time to familiarise yourself with them and their operation. Watching the camper show through video in advance is really helpful to understand your camper. You can also re-watch it at any time in the thl Roadtrip App
- Please check that all travel extra items that you purchased have been included and are present in the camper
- Check you have enough bedding and towels
- Ask our crew member if you have any questions or if you see anything that concerns you. We want to ensure you get on the road safely and with confidence. We find some guests need more time than others to pick up a camper, as there a few more things to run through than with a usual car hire. This may delay your departure, so please allow plenty of time for pick-up in your itinerary.
- Pack your belongings into the camper and hit the road!
- If you haven’t downloaded the thl Roadtrip app- do it before you leave the branch
- We recommend not driving too far on your first day and to have a campsite booked at a holiday park to plug into power, fully charge your battery and settle into your camper on that first night.
Unfortunately, we do not have the option for early or late pick-ups after hours. If your flight arrives later than expected, we recommend you stay in a hotel nearby that night and come in when the branch opens the next morning (no refunds apply for late pick-ups). Please call us to let us know if you will be collecting your camper the next day, so we know to still expect you.
Campervans must be collected from and returned to the branch confirmed for your booking.
In New Zealand, our branches in Auckland, Christchurch and Queenstown are conveniently located near the airports, where we offer complimentary shuttle transfers to and from the branch.
The New Zealand Government has introduced a new travel requirement for some visitors and transit passengers. It’s called the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) and travellers need to request theirs via the official mobile app or website. Approval can take up to 72 hours, so get yours before you go.
The NZeTA is required for travel from 1 October 2019.
Visit immigration.govt.nz/nzeta to find out if you need one.
