Provided the campervan you have rented is fully self-contained (meaning it has built-in toilet facilities and fresh water/grey water tanks on board) you are allowed to 'freedom camp' in designated sites. Please obey local signage and regulations and ask at local information centres [look for blue i-SITE signs or visitor information signs in each town] for suitable places to stay. Please do be aware that you may be fined for 'freedom camping' in non-designated areas.
To fully charge your campervan's auxiliary [house] battery you will need to plug the vehicle into 240V mains power regularly. We recommend you stay in holidays parks to charge the battery at a minimum every second night. Your camper may not be fully charged on pick-up so we do recommend you book your first night in a Holiday Park or campground to give you the opportunity to fully charge your camper.
We recommend downloading the thl Roadtrip app for android or iPhone - you'll get up to date information on where to stay, places of interest on the road, as well as helpful locations such as public bathrooms, dump stations & supermarkets.
If you plan on freedom camping, your camper needs to be Certified Self Contained. How long you freedom camp depends on what facilities you wish to use in your campervan. The more equipment you use the quicker you will use the available charge on your house battery. To prolong your freedom camping experience, try to keep the fridge closed as much as possible. A good tip is to keep the fridge filled, even by using recycled bottles filled with water, and turning the fridge to a lower setting. Parking the vehicle in the shade can also reduce power consumption.
We recommend plugging in and recharging your house battery every second night at a powered site to maintain the lights, fridge and water pump.
Campsites offer facilities to empty your waste water and toilet cassette, and many also offer laundry facilities to refresh your towels and sheets.

If you are travelling during peak periods such as school holidays, public holidays and long weekends, it is best to book your campground in advance to avoid disappointment. You can search for and book campsites and holiday parks through the thl Roadtrip App.
